Facilities

The Graduate Center:

Graduate studios and labs are located in the Graduate Center on Poplar Avenue.  Located within are two computer labs in addition to a separate digital and analog audiovisual lab. Three gallery spaces are used throughout the year to exhibit graduate student work, including a separate space that accommodates installation work. All MFA candidates are provided 24 hours access to studios in the center.

Art Education Resource Center (AERC):

The AERC offers over 500 book titles that deal specifically with issues, research and strategies in Art Education. It is located on the 3rd floor of Rust Hall. Appointments are necessary for check out of materials. Please contact Dr. Cathy Wilson (901) 272-5191 or cwilson(at)mca(dot)edu

Rust Hall:

Graduate students have access to undergraduate facilities in Rust Hall:

  • MCA's shop has 4,400 square feet with machines for woodworking, metalworking, plastic molding, mat cutting, glass cutting, and stretcher and frame construction.

  • MCA has large metals and clay sculpture studios, as well as a separate foundry and welding areas for castings and metalwork. The clay studio has nine wheels, a space for hand-building and glazing and a semi-enclosed firing room.

  • Fiber arts/surface design has three studios and a dye room, manual and computerized looms, washer/dryer, range tops, refrigerators and sewing machines.

  • Printmaking, papermaking, and book arts studios provide easy interaction between these related media. Printmaking has facilities for lithography, etching, serigraphy and other print processes.

  • Book arts includes three letterpresses and a bindery. The wet room is equipped with beaters, a 36-square-foot vacuum table, a hydraulic press and a larger hydraulic pulper.

  • Photo Lab facilities include 10 workstations equipped with Omega large-format enlargers and 12 workstations equipped with Beseler medium-format enlargers. Two color labs, on private and one for groups are equipped with six large-format enlargers, a 16” color processor and color processing equipment.

  • A digital imaging workstation has digital cameras, slide and transparency scanners, flatbed scanners and high-resolution film printer.

  • A lighting studio houses electronic strobe equipment, backgrounds, and medium and large f-format cameras. Also available are facilities for non-silver alternative photo processes.

Full-time graduate students have studio access during the summer between their two years of study.
