As a studio intensive program, the MFA at Memphis College of Art offers a catalytic environment with the goal of developing artistic practices that contribute significantly to contemporary culture. The program emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to artmaking in both traditional and new media. During the course of study, students are encouraged to consider the social, cultural, and physical context of their work as central to its interpretation. Students support and enhance their studio practice with coursework in issues of History, Theory, and Criticism. The program consists of structured coursework and independent studio practice, with the second year culminating in an MFA thesis exhibition and written thesis document. Concentrations are possible in traditional and non-traditional studio practice, including but not limited to painting, drawing, sculpture, book arts, photography, printmaking, fibers, ceramics, installation, animation, public interventions, performance, video, or an individually tailored program of interdisciplinary study. Critical seminars and accomplished faculty from a variety of disciplines working in a range of historical, theoretical, and cultural topics contribute significantly to intensive studio work and final thesis presentation. Instruction blends rigorous group critiques with personal and informal interaction between faculty and students. The diversity and frequency of critical discussion strengthens each student’s personal vision and development of articulate responses. |
