Explore the elements that surround and envelop you. Memphis College of Art’s Surface Design concentration gives students the rare opportunity to enmesh themselves in the fabric of this ancient art form founded in function and artistic expression. Conceptual issues are addressed through ornament and pattern, and resolved embellishment.
WD 110 Introduction to Weaving.
Students
are familiarized with fiber arts through the process of making
hand-woven fabric. Four harness floor looms, weave structures,
and drafting and resist dyeing techniques are explored. Students
develop the ability to use weaving processes as they address
conceptual issues through design practice. Demonstrations
and critiques are scheduled throughout the semester.
Prerequisite:

WD 250/255/350/355/450/455 Intermediate
and Advanced Weaving.
This sequential course of study with four prerequisite intermediate
levels lead to the advanced level. Students increase their
technical understanding and ability by working on multi-harness
looms including the computer-aided Dobby loom. As students
refine their technical skills, courses concentrate on using
woven fiber as a vehicle to extend conceptual development.
Prerequisite: WD 110
SD 105 Introduction to Surface Design.
Students are familiarized
with fiber art through various surface design processes including
resist dyeing, direct painting with dyes, hand embroidery,
sewing and others. Students are encouraged to develop their
knowledge of techniques and their ability to use surface
design to carry out concepts and ideas.
Prerequisite: None
SD 200/205/300/305/400/405 Intermediate and Advanced
Surface Design.
This sequential course of study with four prerequisite
intermediate levels leads to the advanced level. The technical
vocabulary taught includes silkscreen, machine embroidery,
garment construction, computer printing and others. Courses
concentrate on furthering students’ abilities to integrate
material, process, form and content through fiber art.
