Main Gallery

A Dog's Life is on view through April 10 in the Main Gallery. A reception is Friday, March 20 from 6-8 pm. Exhibiting painter and illustrator Katy Schneider lectures on Thursday, April 9 at 7 pm in Callicott Auditorium.

Curated by Beth Edwards, the paintings, drawings and prints in this exhibition comprise twenty-two artists' comments upon the plight of dogs. These works reveal feelings of delight, fond companionship and love, as well as respect and fear. The exhibition includes works by the following artists: Helen Beckman, Debra Bermingham, Larry Edwards, Roy De Forest, Jane Dickson, Grant Drumheller, Brenda Goodman, Janice Gordon, Julie Heffernan, David Hockney, Laurie Hogin, Jed Jackson, Riva Lehrer, Tina Newberry, Celia Reisman, Emily Sartor, Katy Schneider, Keiler Sensenbrenner, Mary Sims, Jane Smaldone, Robin Tewes and Robert Warrens.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Saturday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, and Sunday from noon to 4:00 pm.

Calendars and Commas, the MFA Thesis Exhibition of works by Jennifer Barnett Hensel and Anna Kordsmeier opens March 19 and continues through March 28. A closing reception is Friday, March 29 from 6-9pm.

Deleterious, works by MFA candidates Michael Aldana and Alexander Paulus is on view April 2 through April 11, with an opening reception Friday, April 3 from 6-9pm.

Breaking Ground, works by MFA candidates Danita Barrentine and Ben Utigard, is on view April 23 through May 9, with an opening reception Friday, April 24 from 6-9pm.

The exhibitions and receptions are free and open to the public.

on the street is located at 338 South Main, immediately west of the venerable Raiford's Lounge. Gallery hours are Thursday and Friday, 4 to 9 pm, and Saturday, noon to 5 pm. All events are free and open to the public.

Alumni Side Gallery

Power and Control, an exhibition by Chris Collins, MFA 2005, Studio Arts, is on view in the Alumni Side Gallery (just north of the Main Gallery) through April 17, 2009. An opening reception is on Friday, March 20 from 6-8 pm in MCA’s Main Gallery.

Visiting Artists/Lectures

Spencer Bohren lectures Thursday, March 26 at 7 pm in Callicott Auditorium. A musician and artist, Bohren will deliver a a musically illustrated lecture on how the voyage of African chant to this country gave rise to the blues and much of popular music as we know it today. It is titled "Down the Dirt Road Blues," which he has presented to museums, schools, and colleges throughout the country.

Kerry Freedman lectures Saturday, March 28 at 5 pm in Callicott Auditorium. A Professor of Art Education at Northern Illinois University, Freedman’s research focuses on questions concerning the relationship of curriculum to art, culture, and technology. Throughout her career, she has investigated social aspects of art education and promoted cultural understanding through her teaching, research, and writing. Recently, she has focused particularly on questions concerning student engagement with visual culture and issues surrounding curriculum change in light of postmodern educational conditions.

Katy Schneider, a painter and illustrator whose work is on exhibition in A Dog's Life, lectures on Thursday, April 9 at 7 pm in Callicott Auditorium. A professor at Smith College, Schneider's images are focused on balancing her life as a mother and as an artist. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship.

Artwork Creates Some Controversy, a story about MFA candidate Shawn Wallace, appeared in the Friday, March 6 edition of the Times Daily in Florence, AL.

The Art of Teaching, the cover story of the March 12-18, 2009 edition of the Memphis Flyer profiles the 60 professional artists who were hired by Memphis City Schools to teach art two years ago. Several of the artists profiled are students enrolled in MCA's Graduate Art Education programs.
