John Avis is the recipient of a number of awards and honors over his three decades of service in education. Among them are TSSAA A.F. Bridges Principal of the Year (Athletic District 9) in 2004-04, TASC Administrator of the Year for 2001-02, the Dr. Marian E. Hamm Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award from State Technical Institute in 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1996, the Outstanding Teacher Award from Christian Brothers University in 1985 and the Rotary Award for Teaching Excellence in 1984. He has conducted and presented a wide range of educational research on literature, writing, and leadership.
