BA, University of Virginia
MA; Ph.D., University of Virginia

Ellen Daugherty is a specialist in American and African American art.  Her current research is based on her dissertation, Lifting the Veil of Ignorance: The Visual Culture of African American Racial Uplift, an exploration of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century public imagery that prescribed education, wealth, and increased gentility as a program for improvement for African Americans.

Professor Daugherty was the recipient of fellowships including the Luce/ACLS Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in American Art, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship, and an Ailsa Mellon Bruce travel fellowship from the Center for the Advanced Study in the Visual Arts.  She has recently presented papers at the College Art Association, the University of Delaware Emerging Scholars of Material Culture conference, and the Savannah College of Art and Design biannual conference.
