Memphis, TN- Memphis College of Art presents an exhibition of works inspired by 27 years of the Horn Island, MS excursion. Horn Island 27 is on view in the Main Gallery and Lower Gallery of Rust Hall, 1930 Poplar Avenue in Overton Park, through October 7. A reception is Saturday, September 10 from 5:30 to 9:00 pm.
The Horn Island workshop, inspired by painter Walter Anderson, brings MCA students, faculty, alumni and friends on a creative excursion to the small and uninhabited barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico, ten miles off the coast of Pascagoula, MS. Since 1985, MCA’s artists have braved the heat, humidity and mosquitoes in rugged and challenging living conditions and transformed their experiences into the artwork exhibited in the show.
As in years past, friends of MCA contribute to the artist’s creative journey. In exchange for financial support, sponsors receive artwork created by the student as a result of his or her trip.
The Horn Island exhibition kicks off MCA’s academic year and is one of the College's most popular and well-attended shows. Visitors view and may purchase the island inspired artwork while enjoying island hors d’oeuvres.
The exhibitions and receptions are free and open to the public. For more information, visit mca.edu.
