New Visions Series Presents: Adrift

Memphis, TN–Memphis College of Art hosts Adrift, a New Visions Series Exhibition, September 18 – November 12, 2011 in the Hyde Gallery, Nesin Graduate School located at 477 South Main. A Trolley Night Reception is Friday, September 30 from 6 to 9 pm. The exhibition, curated by MCA Professor Cynthia Thompson, includes works by: Janine Antoni, Beth Cavener Stichter, Petah Coyne, Jason Dodge, Nils Ericson, Markus Hansen, Erin Harmon, Damien Hirst and Miranda Lichtenstein. In conjunction with the exhibition, ArtsMemphis Gallery presents a video installation by Donna Smith.

"Adrift is a solemn and often unsettling portrait of vulnerability, lamentation and mortality," states Professor Thompson about the exhibition. "It is a reflection on grief that has happened or will be happening, on the sadness of not being able to hold onto something fleeting—life, beauty, breath— and the heartbreak encountered by this futile attempt. Images, which while beautiful are fraught with sorrow and abandon, beckon the viewer to pause and reflect on the frailty of our own existence and the manner in which one acknowledges life and death; faith and beauty and resignation."

Now in it’s eleventh year, the New Visions Series continues to bring works from both nationally recognized artists and emerging artists to Memphis and provides students and the community with the opportunity to experience and view works of art they would otherwise be unable to see.

The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 5 pm. For more information call 901. 272.5100.
