SATURDAY SCHOOLSpring 2012 Saturday School has been a beloved Memphis tradition for 75 years. Many of our current students have parents or grandparents who attended the program as children. Building a love of art for a lifetime begins here at MCA. We recognize that engagement with art nurtures creative thinking, provides an outlet for self-expression, strengthens self-confidence and helps develop an appreciation for the world outside ourselves. Class sizes are small by design, allowing for individualized attention to each student’s unique skills and abilities. We offer qualified teaching artists, inspiring media and excellent facilities. As the only independent, fully accredited professional art and design institution in Memphis, we are uniquely qualified to guide your children, nurturing in them a love for the arts and an appreciation for lifelong learning. COURSES Spring Session I Students choose one class in the appropriate age range. AGES 5-7 Art FUNdamentals This class nurtures children’s innate need to create by providing knowledge of the fundamental building blocks of art: shape, line, color, form and value. Students explore drawing, painting, and other media such as printmaking and collage. Enjoyable and inventive activities enhance skills as well as concentration and visual awareness. The class will focus on the basics while fostering a fun and creative atmosphere for learning. 3-D Discovery Creating sculptural artwork is fun and challenging. Children design and create their own 3-dimensional works of art exploring various sculpture media and methods. Through fun, hands-on projects using everything from fabric to found objects, papier-mâché to clay, children explore design principles and challenge the laws of physics. AGES 8-10 Art FUNdamentals See description above. Pop-Up Books Students create mixed media collages using them to make a series of pop-up books with interactive pages of Matisse-like pop-ups, hidden messages and other fantastic surprises. Students learn about the history of pop-up art, practice different techniques used to create pop-up books and become pop-up book artists themselves.
AGES 11 & UP
